Devon Laminate Flooring Specialists describe exactly what laminate flooring actually is.

Recently laminate flooring has become one of the best selling floor coverings in Devon. But what  exactly is laminate flooring?

Laminate flooring is a tongue and groove interlocking flooring system. It is installed over the top of the existing substrate & simply lays there.

Plywood, concrete slab, sheet vinyl flooring, hardwood flooring, or virtually any other basically flat hard surface is suitable for a "floating" laminate installation.

Laminate flooring consists of four main components that are bonded together. A wear resistant decorative surface made of resin based melamine/
aluminum oxide.

This material is bonded to a moisture resistant wood composition based core. A balancing backing is bonded to the underside of the core. On the top is a clear cap sheet of Aluminum Oxide, which provides the protection and stain resistance.

By using the counter top technology and adding considerably more resin to the wear layer, laminates have become an ideal floor covering.

In fact, some laminate floor manufacturers boast that their laminate floors are now 10 to 20 times harder than laminate counter tops. Since this resin filled wear layer is so dense, it becomes extremely difficult to stain, scratch, or burn with a cigarette. It is possible however to scratch any floor.

Aesthetically, the most common laminate flooring designs have a wood grain visual appearance. Some manufacturers have even released textures such as realistic stone and marble.

Devon Flooring Specialists James Bell Flooring give a brief overview on the differences and advantages of Laminate and Engineered Wood Flooring.

Wood flooring dates back many years, but in recent years threre has been a massive increase in its popularity. Many people are ditching their carpets and replacing them with various types of flooring including laminate and engineered wood flooring.

Laminate flooring and engineered wood floors are proving to be ever more popular in Somerset and the majority of England due to fact that they are much easier to maintain compared with carpet. This is due to the fact that they are more hard wearing, and you do not have to worry about spilling the odd drop of red wine on the living room floor, as unlike with carpet you can just wipe the mess up and it does not leave a stain!

Laminate and Engineered Wood Flooring can work well in any home and can create a fresh, crisp modern look to every room.

You may be wondering what the differences between Laminate and Engineered wood flooring are and also the advantages of each of these type flooring. Below James Bell Flooring specialists will outline a few of these.

Both laminate flooring and engineered wood flooring incorporate the tongue and groove system which may play a factor in the reasons for these flooring types becomming ever more popular. This is because the floor is therefore relatively quick and easy to lay.

Engineered wood floors are different from laminate floors because engineered wood floors are constructed of a hardwood veneer attached to a core such as High-Density Fibreboard, and a wood veneer backing. Laminate floors however contain no actual hardwood surface area.

Engineered wood floors are manufactured having multiple thin ply layers which are glued together. The inner cores are normally either a hardwood and/or soft plywood type of material. The top thicker hardwood veneer wear layer is glued on top surface of the core and is available in almost any hardwood types. To see this more clearly look at the image below.

Engineered wood flooring and laminate wood flooring are slightly more resistant to moisture levels than solid wood flooring, this is due to their floating nature, which adds to their appeal to use in damp basements.
Planks can be protected from moisture by installing a vapor barrier under the underlay. However some manufacturers do not recommend using these types of flooring in bathrooms.
